Epiphone is long famous for its own original semi-hollowbody models from the s Kalamazoo, Michigan era, including the Riviera and the Sheraton. During the same time those guitars were designed and constructed in Kalamazoo, the ES , first introduced in , became a favorite of blues, rock, country, and pop acts for its elegant design and wide array of colorful tone combinations. Now, the Epiphone Dot, named in reference to its simple “Dot” fingerboard inlays, brings the sustain and resonance of the clsssic semi-hollow design for a bounty less than most solid body guitars. Now I drive a 97 Volvo station wagon and my car days are behind me. On the contrary, a nice new paint job enhances the value over a rusty, faded, worn or damaged original. So, why is a refinished guitar worth no more than half its unmolested sibling? If I go out and buy a brand new Les Paul and send it to one of a few well respected refinishers Tom Murphy, Dave Johnson, Scott Lentz and a few others , I can actually enhance the value a bit. The fact that his finish was far, far superior to the original Gibson finish may have had something to do with it.
So I sold it.
The Epiphone Riviera helped reinvent Epiphone in the s as a modern guitar company whose instruments sported such contemporary features as thinline, semi-hollow, double-cutaway bodies and humbucking pickups. In the minds of older guitarists, Epiphone was a traditional New York-based company, with.
This is one of the most frustrating questions from the MIJ collector. People often make the mistake of citing the American or European importer as the ‘maker’ of the guitar, when in fact several Japanese manufacturers were producing badged guitars out of their plants and shipping them to America and Europe to sell. Japanese manufacturers made multiple badges at the same plant, many of whom resemble each other closely. Some manufacturers merged or changed hands over the years which added to the confusion, sometime merging with another maker, only to pick up their name later.
In some cases a manufacturer would farm out production to various manufacturers, making it still more difficult to know who made the guitar in your hands. Parts from other guitars would be used in the making of a particular badge for a period of time because it was all the manufacturer had to hand And sometimes, the guitar which is supposed to be an MIJ guitar is actually made elsewhere Korea, Indonesia because production was moved during this period in history.
This page is a work in progress and as new information is revealed it will be added to the list. But I can’t do this alone, folks. See a guitar not listed? In some cases I won’t know because the badge you have may be extremely rare and virtually unknown to even seasoned collectors. And just a quick note: I do not buy or sell guitars. I have no idea what any given guitar from this period would sell for.
Why are Peerless MIK Epis so good?
This is a great collector. Although it has been strongly associated with the that was the first Epiphone to come out of the Matsumoku factory in Japan, this model has some very important differences that set it apart from the the models produced during the prior two years. First, the bridge on this model is set and does not experience the displacement associated with it’s predecessors. The pick-up’s are actually single coil and covered with the more conventional looking Gibson Humbucker Covers.

The Epiphone Interview On January 14, , during the era of popular music when the electric guitar had been pushed aside by keyboards and synthesizers, Henry Juszkiewicz and Dave Berryman, two entrepreneurs who had met in graduate school, purchased a struggling guitar company called Gibson. Thrown into the bargain was another guitar company owned by Gibson since Epiphone. While Juszkiewicz and Berryman went to work putting Gibson back into shape–improving quality, distribution, and dealer relationships–the new owners also began to slowly unravel the long history of Epiphone, the House of Stathopoulo.
In the process, they discovered they had a diamond in the rough with a history of producing groundbreaking instruments and a story unlike any other in the history of American instruments. They also discovered that Epiphone’s greatest rival in the guitar business had been Gibson and that Epiphone fans from all generations had a fierce loyalty to the brand despite its long and rocky history.
We spoke with Dave while he thumbed through Walter Carter’s new book, The Epiphone Guitar Book, edited by Tony Bacon “I love the layout–the blend of instrument shots, historical catalogs, and promotional information.

Way back in the the early legend of guitar research, Michael Wright, published a short list like this in his book Guitar Stories Volume One. Many thanks need to go out to the main contributors to this list besides yours truly. These three guys are just so great for sharing what they know. So I really appreiate these fellers! As of late, the great Bill Menting has been filling in some of the missing information, and again, I appreciate it!
Also, a million thanks goes to the excellent work of Michael Wright, who was writing and researching these guitars when people were just as likely to throw them in the trash. I also want to mention the great site Jedistar. That fellow has done some really excellent work compiling all sorts of information regarding guitar brands from all over the world, both past and present.
Now before all you curmudgeons and codgers start blasting away at the information compiled here, I want you to stop and think about my mission for a moment. This is just to help people out, so maybe somebody can rediscover the guitar of their youth. Maybe someone can connect with that eager teenager that wailed away in a garage in the middle of nowhere.
You get my drift?

Dave Gregory Now if you want to talk guitar, ask Dave Gregory. He was crushed that he couldn’t take his entire guitar harem over 20 with him for Oranges and Lemons, but he made do with his faves: Gregory uses Ernie Ball strings “out of force of habit,” but creates his own gauge set: He has a Roland JC amp “for those rare occasions that I go out of the house,” and a Japanese Fender Sidekick 30 amp for home practice.
The Roland PG programmer that goes with his D confuses the hell out of him.

The Orvilles had different model specs. They did not just change the logo from Orville to Epiphone Japan, they had a different model line. Some Epiphone Japan models might be similar to some Orville models. Whatever happened with the exporting, the exported Epiphone Japan guitars don’t have a open book headstock design. The Orville and Epiphone Japan production number part of the serial numbers might overlap in but they are never accurate anyway and they probably were made side by side for a few months in Orvilles stopped in and Epiphone Japan solid body production began.

New Mexico Hi, I’m a pretty much amateur guitar player looking to pick up a new guitar. I’ve been researching this for a while and trying out various guitars, and so far I have kind of narrowed it down to the Epiphone p93 and the Gretsch pro jet. I’m looking closest at these two guitars because they both fit well within my price range, both have a bigsby tremelo, they are extremely well reviewed, and are both stunningly beautiful, although, personally, I think the Pro Jet gold is just the tiniest bit prettier than the Epiphone.
But at this point I’m having trouble deciding between them. I’ve heard a ton of good and bad for both, most significantly that the bigsby tends to detune the Pro Jet and the P90’s can be lukewarm in terms of quality. Now, I know there already exists a versus thread similar to this one but it wasn’t enough to sway me in either direction so I’ve decided to start this new thread instead of reviving that one.
